Scottish Water Solutions - Team Building - Mayar 3043ft - 23rd November 2006

'The success of this day was due to the exceptional resolve and abilities of the team to challenge themselves and step beyond the normal realms of team building and everyday expectations'       Andy Sharples; Director of Commercial; Scottish Water Solutions

There are a wide range of skills and knowledge that a leader needs in order to operate effectively. Not only is it necessary to perform each element in isolation, it is also vital that leaders are able to combine several skills at any one time.

Our tailor made management and leadership programmes are intensive, provocative and challenging.

Our programme pushes each client to gain a personal insight into what makes them ‘tick’, and then, with that understanding of their capabilities, to stretch the boundaries of what’s comfortable for them. Coupled with this, we focus on their ability to see what’s going on around them and for them to have the ability to think on their feet. This, we believe, is an essential quality that anyone in a position of leadership must develop.

In our opinion, the Mountain environment lends itself superbly to enhancing leadership skills and capabilities of individual clients.

Our main aims are to help the client be able to:-

a. demonstrate a sound leadership style and sound judgment with regard to the group and it’s objectives;
b. meet the changing needs of the group with regards to individual skills;
c. make suitable route choices, interpret and evaluate terrain, revising routes when necessary;
d. identify and manage risk;
e. demonstrate effective group management and supervision skills.

We believe that these aims can be realised in the Mountain environment. By definition, mountains mean freedom, adventure, beauty and solitude. Despite these attributes, all activities have inherent hazards associated with them, especially the Mountains, so it is important that each client appreciates that they have a responsibility to take all reasonable steps to eliminate or minimise the potential for an accident to arise. By developing the leadership skills in Mountainous areas, we aim to show how potential problems could be eliminated or minimized - as the Mountain environment can change in a matter of minutes, clients need to be able to show that can adapt quickly and calmly to their surroundings.

We believe that on returning to the office situation, clients will be more aware of what’s happening around them and have a greater ability to think on their feet.

Each participant will now work towards a National Award - the nnas Bronze or Silver Award (see NAVIGATION section for details) - therefore returning to the office with not only 'exceptional resolve', but a Nationally certified Certificate to prove it !
